Super excited to announce that Ben Queen-Fryer, chef and co-owner @dog_and_gun_skelton will be joining us on Sunday 7th May to cook up a storm alongside our ever expanding incredible roster of cooking talent. His menu is always full of fantastic local produce, including (for the last year or so) our beef) which changes by the season and is always an absolute joy to eat at. The Dog and Gun has just been shortlisted for the @britishgq food and drink awards in the Best Pub category, and are also finalists for the @cumbriafoodawards in the same category. The Dog and Gun in Skelton was called a “charming, relatively unchanged, wholly unpretentious village pub” recently in the @guardian by @gracedent and it is just that, a beautiful, natural place that just happens to serve some of the best food you’ll ever eat, earning it a Michelin ⭐️ in 2022, 3 AA rosettes, a listing as one of the best 50 Gastropubs in the UK @top50gastropubs and Best Dining Pub 2019 and 2020 in the Cumbria Life Food and Drink Awards. Quite the roll call for an unassuming pub.
Bens menu is flexible, changing regularly and he puts this down to the excellent suppliers he has now, such as @torpenhow.cheese.co and @lakelanddexter who will both also be at the 54ºNORTH Festival. The suppliers help define The Dog and Gun menu, if it’s in season and high quality they use it whilst it’s available. The menu is less choreographed and more about being able to change alongside suppliers’ availability. Ben has a simple outlook, focus on the food on the plate, and allow other parts to follow, no need for table cloths or sommeliers with huge wine lists, it’s super relaxed, where flavour comes first, now that is something that we admire.
In addition to being an exceptional chef Ben also has a range of small batch soft drinks made in Cumbria using hand pressed juice @queenfryersdrinks
